The Maw of the Star-Eater is a series of one-shot sessions of Dungeons & Dragons 5e (2014) run by Sara "Nim" Cantwell, inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons Dragonlance series, Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern, and George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones. Set in the frozen Astigar Reaches of the homebrewed world, Omyire, Maw of the Star-Eater is part mystery, part treasure hunt, and part survival story.

This series is designed for 4-6 players per session to explore the secrets of the magical Weir Lighthouse and the wild landscape of the Astigar Reaches. Players can be new to the game or well-seasoned; a minimum age of 12 is required to play without parental assistance. Sessions are designed for learning as you play, and many in-play supports will be provided. Players’ characters start at level 4, can be any species/class combination with a few exceptions, and will level up with story milestones.

A character creation session kicks everything off on February 14th from 1-4 pm, and future sessions will run on the 2nd and 4th Saturday each month thereafter. Players and characters can swap between sessions as needed, because each session will be considered a stand-alone story. Everything needed to play will be provided, but players are welcome to bring any extras, like personal dice or minis, if they wish.

Story Prompt

High in the north lay the Astigar Reaches, a land of bitter, biting air, dense taïga forests, and wide expanses of open ice. There is a sublimity to the vast skies often blanketed with the weight of infinite stars, and night seems to linger here. Gathered like specks of dirt on an endless sheath of snow, settlements flank the Weir Lighthouse—a towering tribute to magics of a world gone from living memory. It rises from the craggy landscape as a barrier between many worlds: land and sea, sky and ice, but more mundanely, soldier and civilian.

Breaker’s Motte and Bailey Castle sits at the end of The Breaker’s Fjord, controlling the safest and fastest access to the sea. The hamlet of Chillbourne rests further inland with access to taïga hunting grounds and medicine of the wilds—distrust and distaste for each other’s way of life breed contempt between these keepers of land and sea. There is only a tepid peace between these suspicious folk, fostered by the Weir Lightkeeper, Osorin—a peace now tested by strange rumblings from the earth and peculiar portents in the night sky. Some say these are signs an old dragon god returns…

And this is where you find yourself, dear adventurer. Are you one of the Chillbourne folk with their resourceful savviness, or with the Breaker's Brigade, who have the might of an army and the security of castle walls?
